Armed gunmen in Syria who carried out a wave of recent sectarian killings of the country’s Alawite minority were advised and overseen by government forces, according to evidence gathered by the BBC.
One man, Abu Khalid, said he had travelled as a civilian fighter to the Mediterranean coastal village of Sanobar on 7 March, to help battle former regime insurgents.
He filmed himself shooting dead a 64-year-old village resident, Mahmoud Yusef Mohammed, at the entrance to his house. Abu Khalid, who has now been arrested, insisted his victim was an armed insurgent. However video he filmed of the incident does not support his account. He now says he had been told by the government security officials not to harm civilians but only to shoot at insurgents.
Human rights groups estimate that almost 900 civilians, mainly Alawites, were killed by pro-government forces across Syria's coastal region in early March. The Alawite sect is an offshoot of Shia Islam and its followers make up around 10% of Syria's population, which is majority Sunni. Syria’s former President Bashar al-Assad who fled the country last December is an Alawite.
Syria's coastal area - a stronghold of the former regime - has been largely sealed off, but a BBC team gained access, speaking to witnesses and security officials about what happened in Sanobar. The violence came a day after fighters loyal to the country's former President led deadly raids on government security forces.
Syria’s new Sunni Islamist-led government had called for support from various military units and militia groups to respond to those raids – but that escalated into a wave of sectarian anger against Alawite civilians.
Witnesses told the BBC that several different armed groups had targeted Alawites for summary executions. Some also said that government security forces had battled violent and extremist factions in order to protect Alawite villagers from attack.

One of the largest Palestinian refugee camps in the occupied West Bank has become uninhabitable, said the mayor of Jenin.
Before the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October 2023, Israel was already engaged in a military campaign against armed groups in the West Bank.
Israel's defence minister has called the camps "nests of terror" and in January stepped up its campaign against the armed groups operating inside them – entering and blockading a number of refugee camps in the northern West Bank that are home to tens of thousands of Palestinians.
It ordered residents to leave and began a wave of building demolitions, while giving some residents brief opportunities to gather belongings.
The BBC has followed the story of one man who was forced out of the Jenin refugee camp and whose home was identified for demolition by the IDF.

In today's video, I find live animals in pet store dumpsters! I started off by exploring a dumpster behind a fish store and immediately I found a box full of fish... luckily they were all still alive so I added them into a bucket and I kept going! I then found another box that was full of more fish, axolotls, crawfish, and eels! After saving all of the fish from the first dumpster I moved onto the next one that was behind a fish store that sells rare fish! I started my search through all of the trash and eventually I found a bunch of live fish including arownas, pufferfish, sturgeon, and albino redtail catfish! After that things got even crazier and I found more bags of man-eating catfish! However all of these fish were running out of oxygen so I quickly added them into a bucket and I moved onto the next dumpster that was behind a saltwater fish store! I started my search through all of the garbage and I managed to find a box full of crazy sea creatures! Inside was some clownfish, shrimp, and mystery fish! But it didn't stop there, right after that I found another box full of moray eels, sea urchins, and starfish! So far we have saved so many fish, but now it was time to explore a reptile store dumpster so who knows what we're gonna find! I jumped in and it didn't take me long to find my first animal which was a leopard gecko... As I kept going I found pacman frogs, tarantulas, crabs, turtles, and even snakes! After saving all of the animals I could, I moved onto the last dumpster of the video which was behind an asian food market! This was by far the grossest dumpster, but after some searching I found a bag full of live shrimp! But that was just the beginning because next I found live bullfrogs, blue crabs, eels, and even lobsters! Should I make a part 2 saving more animals from dumpsters?

Brazilian police said they prevented a bomb attack planned for Lady Gaga's concert on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday.
The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro state, in coordination with the Justice Ministry, said suspects had recruited participants to carry out attacks using improvised explosives, and the plan was aimed at gaining notoriety on social media.
The person responsible for the plan was arrested and a teenager was apprehended, the police posted in a statement on X.
Officials said a crowd of more than two million people gathered for the concert, which was free to attend.
